calculator.net is the only one that says where its system came from, citing Lee, Istook, Nam and Park, "Comparison of body shape between USA and Korean women", published in the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology in 2007. A clothing journal, which tells you what the taxonomy was designed to do.

The thresholds are barely published at all

Only Omni prints any numbers, and only three of them:

  • Inverted triangle when the bust is 3 or more inches larger than the hips
  • Spoon or triangle when the hips are 2 or more inches larger than the bust
  • Rectangle when the waist is less than 9 inches smaller than the hips or bust

Inch Calculator publishes none, saying only that the ratios give you an idea. calculator.net names its source study without reproducing the rules.

So this calculator applies those three and stops. Anything they don't cover comes back as a description, since inventing a fourth threshold to complete the set would mean making up the part that's missing. Most tools would call that case an hourglass; none of them will tell you where the line sits.

Where waist-to-hip ratio stops working

It needs two separate tape measurements, so measurement error compounds across both. Healthline lists who it doesn't suit: people under five feet tall, people with a BMI of 35 or above, and children.

Strong glutes read as large hips, which lowers the ratio without anything having changed about visceral fat. A lifter and a sedentary person can post the same number for opposite reasons.
