What lean body mass tells you
Lean body mass is your total weight minus your fat weight, so it counts muscle, bone, organs, blood, and water. For most adults it sits between 60 and 90 percent of body weight, and it is the part of you that stays when a good diet strips fat. An 80 kg man of average build carries roughly 61 kg of lean mass and 19 kg of fat.
Lean mass and muscle mass are different things. Muscle is one slice of lean mass; bone, organs, blood, and water fill out the rest, so your lean figure always sits well above your muscle weight alone.
There are two ways to reach the number. Know your body fat percentage and lean mass is exact. Skip it and three formulas estimate lean mass from your height, weight, and sex. The three formulas, and which to trust
The Boer equation is the one clinicians reach for, and generally the most accurate for healthy adults. Each formula was fit to a different group of people, so they disagree by 2 to 5 kilograms at the same body size. That gap is not noise; it is history.

W is weight in kilograms, H is height in centimetres. Hume drew its data from adults with kidney disease, Boer from healthy adults, which is why we lead with Boer and keep James and Hume beside it for comparison. Clinical guidance also warns off the James formula at very high BMI, where it can read low.
The exact way, if you know your body fat
With a body fat percentage in hand, lean mass needs no formula: it is weight times one minus that fraction. A 90 kg person at 25 percent body fat carries 67.5 kg of lean mass and 22.5 kg of fat, full stop. Lean mass index
Lean mass index is your lean body mass divided by your height in metres squared, the same shape as BMI but for lean tissue alone. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, which is its famous flaw. Lean mass index sidesteps that by measuring only the lean part, so a 1.8 metre lifter and a 1.6 metre runner can be compared on build rather than raw weight. Trainers know the same number as the fat-free mass index, or FFMI, and use it to judge how much muscle a drug-free physique can carry. A figure near 19 is typical for an average-build adult male, higher for the well trained.
Why lean body mass matters
Muscle is metabolically expensive, so a person with more lean mass burns more at rest, which is why two people at the same weight can have very different calorie needs. Medicine cares too. Some drugs, including several anesthetics and chemotherapy agents, are dosed on lean weight, because fat tissue takes up the drug differently and dosing on total weight risks an overdose. On a personal level, watching lean mass separates real muscle gain from the water and glycogen that move the scale day to day.
Where the estimate falls short
Height and weight cannot see your actual muscle, so the formulas assume an average build and miss the extremes. A heavily muscled athlete reads low, a frail person high. The body-fat path is only as good as the percentage you feed it, and home scales that flash a body-fat number are notoriously shaky.
