How the protein calculator works
Protein needs are calculated from body weight in grams per kilogram, not as a share of your calories. Enter your weight and pick a basis, and the tool returns a daily gram target with the RDA kept on screen beside it. That second number matters, because the gap between the floor and a goal-based figure is roughly double, and most calculators show you only one of them.
The arithmetic is a single multiplication. A 70 kg adult at the RDA of 0.8 g/kg needs 56 grams a day. The same person at 1.6 g/kg for muscle building needs 112.
What the RDA actually is
The Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, which Harvard Health also gives as 0.36 grams per pound. Harvard is unusually blunt about what that figure represents: the minimum needed to keep from getting sick, and not the amount you are supposed to eat each day. Its worked case is a sedentary 50-year-old woman at 140 lb, who lands near 53 grams.
Treating a deficiency floor as a target is the single most common misreading in this whole category, and calculators that print one number encourage it.
The number changed in 2026, and the change is disputed
Stanford Medicine reported in March 2026 that revised dietary guidance moved to 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg, up from 0.8. For a 150 lb person that lifts the daily figure from about 55 grams to somewhere between 80 and 110.
Christopher Gardner, a nutrition scientist at Stanford, put a direct question to that revision in the same piece: were we really off by that much, and what new evidence showed it? His answer was that there isn't any.
Two things follow, and no calculator we fetched mentions either. NHANES data cited in that report puts US men at roughly 90 to 100 grams of protein a day already and women at 65 to 75, so most adults were meeting the revised target before it was published. And the wider framework is itself under review: the National Academies issued a letter report on 12 November 2024, Rethinking the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for the 21st Century, conceding that the original ranges rested on the committee's reading of whatever literature existed at the time.

Two protein myths worth dropping
The idea that you can only absorb a fixed amount of protein per meal doesn't hold. Marily Oppezzo, quoted by Stanford Medicine, says studies show no real difference in how the body handles protein spread across the day, which makes meal-splitting a convenience decision.
The anabolic window is the other one. Gym lore describes a half-hour sprint to a shaker; Stanford puts the real figure at around 24 hours.
On kidneys, the honest position is narrower than either camp claims. Healthline reports associations in the literature between high-protein diets and kidney function, with no demonstrated cause and effect in healthy people. Existing kidney disease is a genuinely different situation, and protein restriction is sometimes part of clinical management, so that one belongs with a doctor.
What this calculator does not do
Pregnancy and lactation change the requirement in ways a general tool shouldn't model. Healthline cites 71 grams a day in pregnancy from the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines, and we print that figure without calculating from it, because pregnancy protein targets belong with a doctor or registered dietitian.
